11/30/2023 0 Comments Do vivid dreams mean deep sleep![]() ![]() But they think the following factors may play a part. ![]() So, what causes vivid dreams? Scientists aren’t completely sure. The average adult should get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night for optimal health. REM sleep normally cycles every 90 minutes during a night of sleep and may last 20 to 25 minutes.Ībout 25 percent of an adult’s night of sleep is spent in REM cycles. Scientists know that most heavy dreaming occurs during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Vivid dreams can be positive or negative, realistic or fantasy. But it’s possible to remember a vivid dream long after it’s occurred if it seemed very intense. People are most likely to remember the last dream they had in their sleep cycle. Some people feel more refreshed after having slept and dreamed, even if they do not remember dreaming. Once you explain your concerns to your doctor, the two of you can discuss all the options and determine which one might be the best for you.Brain scientists aren’t sure why humans dream in the first place, but they think it has something to do with memory.ĭreaming might help the brain eliminate any unnecessary information or memories while processing and storing what’s important. Never go off an antidepressant on your own without your doctor’s OK, because stopping too quickly can lead to a resurgence of symptoms and other side effects. Whether you’re currently dealing with antidepressant-induced sleep fallout, or you want help for your depression but would rather avoid sleep issues if possible, the first step is to talk to your doctor, Breus says. For example, a doctor may advise a patient to take a sedating antidepressant at nighttime. Vivid dreams may persist for some people, but lots of times, these sleep issues will subside after a couple of weeks, he adds. “Most people will tell you they mainly see when they first start, then it goes away,” Winter says. These sleep-related side effects often aren’t permanent. If you’re freaked out by how your antidepressant has affected your sleep (or how one might in the future), there’s some good news. Other types of antidepressants can bring about either fatigue or insomnia as side effects. That can result in feeling extra-energized, potentially causing insomnia, Breus says. On the other side of the spectrum, norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitors, like the popular drug bupropion (Wellbutrin), increase the levels of those two neurotransmitters in the brain. “When somebody is taking an SSRI, they have more serotonin in their system for longer, which can have a sedating effect,” leading to sleepiness. “Serotonin is a calming hormone,” Breus says. Take selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like sertraline (Zoloft) and paroxetine (Paxil). “All of these chemicals are big players in the pathways of maintaining or initiating sleep, or chemicals that help you feel awake during the day,” Winter says. These neurotransmitters play another role as well. ![]() Chris Winter, M.D., of Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine and author of The Sleep Solution, tells SELF. “Generally speaking, these medications affect neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine,” which are important for regulating your emotions, board-certified sleep medicine doctor and neurologist W. Although different people can react to the same medication in different ways, there are some basic rules for how various antidepressants might influence your sleep. ![]()
